By way of explanation for my absence and for this article, I should say this: I have written over 75,000 words on a novel in two months. As a result, I haven’t been doing a lot of drawing or painting lately, except an obligatory sketchbook whose contents aren’t really worth posting. Those drawings are simply hand exercises in my daily routine. Make bed. Wash dishes. Draw thing. Cook dinner. Shower.
It is when I write that I have transformed into my feverish and desperate artistic self, the me that happens when I open my mouth to say something that transcends my capacity to understand all at once. Even my verbal muse misses the visual expression, and so I have spent my web-surfing time looking at contemporary paintings, admiring my favorites, letting them move me, and parsing the message.
What they have said, in a remarkably tight zeitgeist-curated chorus, is that our bodies have gone somewhere and we are ambivalent about being abandoned. I see bones, wounds, amputations. I see animal parts, skins, heads. I see frozen faces, serene in their detachment, their emotions implied effectively in groundbreaking ways, but without the help of muscles and skin or smiles and eyes. I see trees, rooting and reaching.
In the lingering perfection of form, the insistence on symbolic representationalism, I see an unwillingness to take our bodies all the way back. Whatever it is that we have purchased at the cost of our own flesh is too costly to simply discard.
The message is that we want to be animals. We want to cut open our weird little synthetic shells and find out what is the most human thing about us. We want to experience our bodies, to frown and smile without typing a single parenthesis, to grow fur and get dirty. It is evident beyond visual art, even in the parlance. It used to be cool, then it was tight, now: the filthier the better.
We don’t have the words to express it, and if we did they wouldn’t fit into an email or a facebook status, so we are developing a system of hieroglyphs, an alphabet of images that we all somehow understand the minute we touch them with our eyes, the only part of us that regularly gets filthy.
I haven’t been drawing a lot lately (see here for excuses) but I have been keeping up with my sketchbooks. I am a right handed person and I’ve decided that I want to be a left handed person.
I’ll be chronicling this process every day. Follow if you want to watch!
I like yours, too!
I like it. Keep posting them please!

Side-by-side. I am like two artists in one, this is still creeping me out a little! But it’s cool!
This is me. I made this other tumblr because I was going to try to be left handed for the LOLs and it was going to be a comedy of errors. But … it hasn’t been. I’ve been doing some really interesting things with my left hand and have been experimenting with drawing ambidextrously. It has been a weird week.
The contemporary human, even of the marginally literate variety, constructs her own metaphors. The phrase, “To coin a metaphor” seems useless now. There is no longer a limited supply of original metaphors, which run as clattering dogs through the messy streets of mainstream language, mixed mutts baying away at tired ears who want for simple pedigree. Rather, indeed, the metaphor is devalued by a swollen supply.
The existence of the phrase, “To coin a phrase” suggests that at one time that act was special enough to have a phrase of it’s very own. In these yellowed days the noble prole left metaphors to crazy writers and instead spoke to each other in references. Everyone had the bible at their hearth and the lucky had the classics at their disposal. With these as their mass-media they kept to parables and fables to express themselves, modeling themselves after their pop heroes like Aesop and Jesus. References were an acceptable and proper way to argue a point.
All but the poets and philosophers, misfits who made one thing into another regularly and without discretion, disruptively artistic in their words. These were the punks who self destructed and left a beautiful residue behind. They wrecked lyres in inns and overdosed on ergot or opium, until the words they mortared brick to brick replaced the culture with pop, and poets are finally rock stars.
What’s the moral of that story?

An update on my strange becoming a lefty goal:
Left chicken with left hand, right chicken with right hand.
Again, the left hand is surprisingly spatially accurate. The right hand drawing started out even more elongated, I erased it down.
(And an improvement on the scanner!)

Part of my workspace. The notes are a prose snippet and a character description that I still haven’t figured out how to use. The strips are a canvas that I cut up in a moment of —Let’s call it inspiration. I need to keep the tape handy and the chicken is going to be mailed out soon.
The note on my monitor is from a grumpy day, it says “Death will not negate that I have been.”
Here is a gif I made just for you.
And for you, too, because this is my “I make art” blog and not my “I make art with my left hand experiment” blog, but you guys matter too while you wait for me to do art that isn’t so left-leaning.
